Celebrating the German language

This week, from 17th- 24th February is a celebration of the German language and the opportunities that it brings. The focus is on importance of the German language in education, careers and cultural exchange in collaboration with the German Embassy London, The Goethe Institut and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). We are encouraged to describe a German language learning highlight.

I have lots of highlights from my German language learning journey so it’s hard to just pick one. I love the literal nature of some words in German.

die Handschuhe = lit. hand shoes = gloves

die Nacktschnecke = lit. naked snail = slug

It’s good to immerse yourself in the culture from a different country which means different food and drink, and observing different festivals. Germany has lots of different festivals to celebrate, and many are specific to certain regions or towns. Oktoberfest started in Munich in Bavaria to celebrate the marriage of the Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen in 1810. It has now spread throughout Germany and gone international.
