What next?
Our SQA language exam candidates have finished their exams. Completing a language exam is a huge milestone. But language learning after exams can feel aimless without a clear plan… So what comes next? It’s easy to lose momentum once the pressure of a test is gone. However, language learning is a lifelong journey, and maintaining your skills (and improving them if that’s a goal) after the exam is just as important. Here’s how to keep going and stay motivated after an exam.
Shift your focus to enjoyment
Now that you’re free from textbooks and test prep, explore the fun side of the language. Watch movies, read novels, listen to music, or follow social media accounts in your target language. This keeps your skills sharp while making learning feel less like a chore.
Set new and personal goals
Without the structure of an exam, it helps to set new goals. These could be conversational—like holding a 10-minute chat with a native speaker—or practical, like writing a short story or blog post. Goals give you direction and a sense of progress. Write them down in a notebook and keep referring to them.
Join a Community
Language learning is more fun with others. Join online forums, local meetups (such as our French or Spanish in person groups), or language exchange apps. Speaking regularly with others keeps you accountable and helps you stay connected to the language.
Make it a habit
10–15 minutes a day can make a difference to your language skills. Use flashcards, journaling, or language apps to keep your brain engaged. Consistency is key.
Celebrate small wins
Recognize your progress, no matter how small. Finished a book? Understood a podcast? That’s a win! Write it down in a notebook or share with your friends and family online.
Language learning doesn’t end with an exam—it evolves. Keep it fun, keep it relevant, and most importantly, keep going. So think about your next language goal.
