Are you fluent yet?

When you learn a second (or third of fourth…) language, people always ask this. Here are some of the meanings of fluent:

  • able to speak or write a particular foreign language easily and accurately:”she became fluent in French and German”
  • (of a foreign language) spoken accurately and with facility:”he spoke fluent Spanish”

What I would add is that you can be fluent in one area of the language, for example the things that you do regularly and the people that you interact with everyday. But if you are taken out of your known area, then it could be a different story. If you never speak about politics and your friend asks you your opinion, perhaps you won’t be as fluent discussing this topic as compared to more familiar ones.
